It also has a really cool accessory – a vintage handlebar-mounted Ray-O-Vac Sportsman flashlight!Īs I looked at the bike in the thrift store, it appeared to be in nearly-rideable condition with new tires and (period incorrect) brake pads. In addition, the Hawthorne sports a Sturmey Archer 3-speed hand grip shifter instead of the typical SA thumb shifter. This bike still retains the Hercules designed chain guard, steering fork, bottom bracket oil port and camel back top tube. Montgomery Wards originally sourced their lightweight bicycles from the Hercules Cycle and Motor Company of England in the 1950’s, which by 1963 was under the control of Raleigh management after a series of British bicycle company mergers. I found this red 1963 Montgomery Wards Hawthorne bicycle at a central Iowa thrift shop over the Fourth of July weekend.
